Tragic Incident: Cyclist Fatally Struck by Suspected Drunk Driver in Lenoir, North Carolina

LENOIR, N.C. — In a devastating incident, a cyclist lost their life after being hit by a suspected drunk driver in Lenoir early Sunday morning, as confirmed by the local police.

The authorities were alerted to the crash on Hickory Boulevard, near Ideal Drive, shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 10th. Upon arriving at the scene, Lenoir police discovered that a cyclist, identified as 36-year-old Nathan Smith, had been struck from behind by the driver of a Hyundai Tucson. Tragically, Smith succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the police statement.

The driver of the Hyundai, 27-year-old Christopher Murillo from Gastonia, was subjected to a field sobriety test by officers who suspected his impairment due to alcohol. Following the test, Murillo was promptly arrested at the scene and now faces charges of felony death by vehicle and DWI. He was granted a $50,000 bond in relation to the death by vehicle charge.
