Charlotte, N.C. (WBTV) – In a recent development, the district attorney has decided not to press charges against a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer involved in a fatal shooting that occurred during a violent attack last summer.

The incident took place on August 25, when officers responded to a distress call made by a woman who reported being stabbed multiple times by her husband and was in imminent danger. Mecklenburg County District Attorney Spencer Merriweather III wrote a detailed letter to the investigators explaining the harrowing chain of events that unfolded at an apartment on Roundstone Way in north Charlotte.

During the 911 call, the woman’s assailant, later identified as Trinity Scott Deese, could be heard in the background. The victim, unable to defend herself any longer or find a place to hide, communicated her dire circumstances to the operator. The letter from Merriweather highlights the woman’s desperate plea for help.

An investigation into the incident revealed that the suspect also made a 911 call, mentioning his hearing impairment. Despite his communication challenges, he confessed to stabbing the woman numerous times, emphasizing her excruciating pain.

Upon arriving at the scene, the police officers could hear the victim’s distressing screams emanating from the back of the apartment. Traces of blood were visible on the carpet as they made their way towards the rear bedroom, as per the district attorney’s letter submitted to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

According to the district attorney, one of the officers’ body-worn cameras recorded Deese ruthlessly attacking the woman, who lay on the bathroom floor. It was at this critical moment that CMPD Officer Claude Neer intervened, firing his weapon four times and ultimately neutralizing the suspect.

The woman, fortunately, survived the horrifying attack and later shared with the police that her husband had been experiencing auditory hallucinations and had a family history of schizophrenia.

Merriweather expressed in his letter to state investigators that the actions of the officers undoubtedly saved the woman’s life.

To conclude, Merriweather stated, “Accordingly, I will not be seeking charges related to the death of Trinity Scot Deese,” firmly establishing the exoneration of CMPD Officer Claude Neer.
