A suspect has been apprehended in connection with the tragic death of a high school cheerleader, whose body was discovered by her mother in a bathtub at their residence. The arrest took place on Saturday in Schulenburg.

The Edna Police Department has reported the arrest of an “undocumented male” identified as 23-year-old Rafael Govea Romero in Schulenburg. The suspect was taken into custody by Edna police and Texas Rangers.

Romero has been transferred to the Jackson County Jail where he is facing charges of Capital Murder in relation to the death of 16-year-old Lizbeth Medina.

According to local media sources, Medina was scheduled to participate in a Christmas parade on Tuesday, December 5th, along with other cheerleaders from Edna High School. When she failed to show up, her mother went home to search for her and tragically found Medina unresponsive in their apartment.

Edna Police Chief Rick Boone stated in a press release on Sunday that the arrest was the result of extensive investigation efforts. However, Chief Boone did not disclose the specifics of Medina’s death, any potential motives, or the relationship between Romero and the victim.

Chief Boone expressed gratitude to the Texas Rangers, Schulenburg Police Department, and Fayette County for their assistance in the case.

The Edna community gathered for a vigil on Saturday to mourn and honor the memory of Lizbeth Medina.
