Anne Arbor Man Accused of Criminal Sexual Conduct with 13-Year-Old Girl Ordered to Undergo Competency Exam

An Ann Arbor man, Gary Lockwood, 31, is facing charges of criminal sexual conduct after being caught in the woods with a 13-year-old girl. On Thursday, December 7, Lockwood appeared before Judge J. Cedric Simpson at the 14-A1 District Court, where he was ordered to undergo a competency exam.

Lockwood is specifically charged with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of accosting children for immoral purposes, one count of using a computer to commit a crime, one count of malicious destruction of fire or police property, and two counts of resisting a police officer. All seven charges against Lockwood are felonies.

According to Ann Arbor police, the incident occurred on Tuesday, September 19, when they received a report of a 13-year-old girl who had run away from home. Ann Arbor police Detective Zachary Allen stated during a swear-to hearing on September 23 that the girl was later found by her father in a nearby wooded area along with an adult man. The man, later identified as Lockwood, fled the scene on foot and could not be located that night.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Lockwood had allegedly met the girl through her 14-year-old sister, who was said to be involved in a sexual relationship with him. Detective Allen further testified that the 13-year-old girl and Lockwood had been exchanging nude photographs via Facebook messenger.

A preliminary search conducted by the police uncovered numerous nude photographs of Lockwood that had been sent to the girl. Detective Allen also mentioned that Lockwood had messaged the 13-year-old girl, inquiring about engaging in sexual acts.

Lockwood was apprehended outside of the Delonis Center, located at 312 W. Huron St., by the Ann Arbor police. It was determined that Lockwood had initially met the girls at a community event in the park.

Despite the charges against him, Lockwood maintains his innocence. During his arraignment hearing in September, he expressed concerns about his own competency.

Currently, Lockwood is being held at the Washtenaw County Jail on a $300,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, March 7, 2024.
