WINDSOR, CT (WFSB) – In a shocking incident, a woman was apprehended by the Connecticut State Police for driving the wrong way on Interstate 291 in Windsor and falling asleep behind the wheel. The accused, identified as 23-year-old Amber Lauren Torruella from Broad Brook, is now facing a list of charges.

The incident unfolded when several concerned motorists alerted the authorities about a wrong-way driver traveling east on Interstate 84 west, near exit 49 in Hartford, at approximately 1:20 a.m. on Saturday. Despite the alarming reports, the driver continued on, eventually merging onto I-291 west via an off-ramp.

Connecticut State Police swiftly responded to the situation and managed to locate the vehicle on I-291 west, specifically on the exit 3 off ramp in Windsor. To their astonishment, they found Torruella fast asleep in the driver’s seat, with the vehicle still running.

Torruella was promptly arrested and transported to a state police barracks for processing. The charges brought against her include driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol, reckless driving, disorderly conduct, first-degree reckless endangerment, driving the wrong way on a divided highway, illegal entry onto a limited access highway, failure to comply with state traffic control signs, improper parking, and disobeying the signal of an officer.

After the arrest, Torruella was released on a $10,000 cash/surety bond. She has been assigned a court date of December 22 in Hartford, where she will face the legal consequences of her actions.
