The encounter occurred when the accused, identified as Dilip Sahani alias Lagan Sahani, allegedly fired at the police while attempting to escape, according to a senior police officer.

The incident took place on Saturday when the Dergaon police apprehended Sahani along with several stolen articles. Acting on the information provided by the accused, the police were being led to a location where he had hidden additional stolen items. However, during the journey, Sahani suddenly produced a pistol from the stolen articles and shot at the police team in an attempt to flee. In response, the police retaliated, resulting in Sahani’s demise, informed Golaghat Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajen Singh in an interview with ANI.

During the encounter, the police team successfully recovered an Italian-made 7.65 mm pistol from Sahani’s possession, along with two empty cases of 7.65mm live ammunition. The deceased had been involved in numerous theft cases over the past several years, instilling fear and terror in the local area. In the last 2-3 months alone, Sahani was responsible for more than 10 theft incidents. SP Singh mentioned that the police, with the assistance of the local public and their intelligence sources, managed to apprehend the accused.

On Saturday night, around 10:45 pm, as the police team reached the Basic Training Centre, an abandoned location, instead of revealing the stolen properties, Sahani unexpectedly brandished a pistol from the stolen articles and opened fire on the police team. In order to protect themselves and safeguard government property, the police team retaliated. After the exchange of gunfire ceased, a search of the area led to the discovery of a bullet-injured Dilip Sahani. He was immediately rushed to Dergaon Community Health Centre, where doctors declared him dead. The investigation is currently ongoing, and the police are actively working to recover all the stolen articles, added SP Singh.
