Woman Fatally Injured in Tragic Wrong-Way Crash in Waterbury, CT

WATERBURY, CT (WFSB) – A devastating accident occurred on Sunday evening in Waterbury, resulting in the tragic death of a woman involved in a wrong-way crash. The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Francisca Jessennia Cortez Arias from Danbury.

First responders were promptly dispatched to the scene of the motor vehicle collision on Interstate 84 eastbound in Waterbury near exit 18. The incident, which took place around 6:20 p.m., involved a total of three vehicles.

According to state police, the collision was triggered when a driver traveling on the highway was abruptly forced to maneuver and swerve in an attempt to avoid a wrong-way driver. This sudden evasive action led to a sideswipe between the two vehicles. Tragically, the situation escalated further when a third vehicle became involved as it was struck head-on following the initial collision.

The wrong-way driver responsible for the devastating incident has been identified as 32-year-old Jhon Jairo Pluas Bajana, also from Danbury. Bajana sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash and was urgently transported to Waterbury Hospital for immediate medical attention.

Regrettably, Francisca Jessennia Cortez Arias, who was a passenger in Bajana’s vehicle, succumbed to her injuries at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury. The loss of Arias is a tragic and heartbreaking consequence of this horrific accident.

In addition to the two drivers involved, three other individuals were also rushed to the hospital for medical treatment following the crash. Their current conditions have not been disclosed.
