The victim has been identified as Cole Merchant, a 17-year-old who tragically lost his life in a crash in Steuben. The Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson, Shannon Moss, confirmed the news in a press release on Monday. The incident occurred when the vehicle Merchant was riding in crashed into a large tree on the passenger side.

Chase Atwater, an 18-year-old from Steuben, was driving the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu involved in the crash. According to Moss, the vehicle was traveling south on Unionville Road in Steuben when it went airborne while cresting a hill, causing Atwater to lose control. The impact of the crash proved fatal for Merchant, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Atwater sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The crash is currently under investigation, with speed suspected to be a contributing factor. Maine State Police troopers responded to the scene at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

In the wake of this tragic incident, Sumner Memorial High School Principal Jackson Green took to Facebook to address the RSU 24 community. Green expressed deep sadness and emphasized the school’s commitment to supporting the affected families. Mental health resources and counseling services have been made available on campus for those in need.
