Kristen Dark, a spokesperson for the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, revealed that James attempted to escape from the housing unit where he was assigned. As a corrections officer opened the door, James pushed past him and ran into the hallway but was eventually detained by other officers. Dark assured the public that the Travis County Jail is a secure facility and there was no possibility of James being able to escape the building or the floor he was on.

Authorities in Austin have linked James to a series of violent events that they believe began in San Antonio and ended in Austin on Tuesday evening. An arrest affidavit stated that police were alerted to a burglary at a home in the Circle C neighborhood of Southwest Austin. The homeowner contacted the police after seeing a man attempting to break into his house on his live surveillance system. At the time, the homeowner’s wife and daughter were inside the residence.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered a gunman inside the home. The suspect attempted to flee through the backyard but shot and injured a police officer before escaping into the garage. Court documents indicate that he then stole the family’s vehicle and fled the scene, prompting police to engage in a high-speed chase. However, James lost control of the stolen vehicle and crashed into another car at the intersection of State Highway 45 and FM 1826, where he was subsequently arrested. A firearm and ammunition were found inside the vehicle, providing further evidence against the suspect.

When officers responded to the burglary in the Southwest Austin neighborhood, they found two individuals with gunshot wounds. The victims were later identified as 56-year-old Katherine Short and her 30-year-old daughter, Lauren Short. Tragically, both women succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

Investigators believe that James first killed his parents at their home near San Antonio before making his way to Austin. Additionally, he is suspected of being involved in the shooting of an Austin Independent School District officer near Northeast Early College High School. Over an hour later, he allegedly shot and killed two more individuals, identified as Emmanuel Pop Ba and Sabrina Rahman, in a South Austin neighborhood.

As of Friday, James remains in custody at the Travis County Jail. The investigation into these horrific crimes is ongoing, and law enforcement agencies are working diligently to gather all necessary evidence and ensure justice for the victims and their families..
