A Toronto man has recently been apprehended by the police for allegedly scamming an elderly woman out of a substantial amount of money. The suspect, identified as Diego Armando Lillo, posed as the victim’s grandson and convinced her that he needed bail money. Alongside another person pretending to be a police officer, Lillo managed to deceive the unsuspecting woman and stole thousands of dollars from her.

The incident came to light when the Toronto Police received a fraud report from the victim’s residence in the Grenadier Road and Roncesvalles Avenue area on Thursday. According to the authorities, the elderly woman received a call the day before from Lillo, who claimed to be her grandson, and another individual posing as a police officer.
During the call, the imposter officer informed the woman that her grandson required $7,500 for bail and that a bondsman would come to her home to collect the funds. In an attempt to prevent the victim from seeking help, the fraudsters instructed her not to inform anyone about the situation, emphasizing that it could jeopardize her grandson’s release. Falling victim to their manipulation, the woman handed over the money to an individual who arrived at her address later that day.
However, the following day, the victim received another call from the pretend police officer, demanding an additional $7,500 for bail. Suspicious of the situation, the woman decided to contact the authorities. When the man arrived at her residence to collect the money, the police were ready and waiting. They swiftly arrested Lillo, who now faces several charges.
On Saturday, the Toronto Police disclosed that Lillo had been charged with two counts of impersonating a peace officer, two counts of fraud over $7,500, one count of assault with intent to resist arrest, and failure to comply with a release order. The authorities believe that there may be additional victims, which prompted them to release Lillo’s photograph, urging others to come forward with any relevant information.
