Ishraq Islam, a grieving husband who lost his wife in the attack, has described her as a “hero” for sacrificing her own life to save their 18-month-old son. Islam’s wife, 24-year-old Sabrina Rahman, tragically lost her life while out for a walk with their son in their Austin neighborhood. According to Islam, Rahman witnessed the suspect, Shane James, fatally shoot 32-year-old Emmanuel Pop Ba, who was assisting them with their move into a new home. In an act of incredible bravery, Rahman ran from the assailant while pushing her baby’s stroller, ultimately throwing the stroller towards their home to protect their child. Sadly, she was shot and collapsed, but her actions saved her son’s life.

The devastating loss of Rahman has left Islam and their family shattered, but he remains determined to remain strong for their child. Islam expressed his desire to ensure their son understands the heroic nature of his mother’s sacrifice and to provide him with an amazing life despite the tragedy. The family had relocated to Austin from Vancouver, British Columbia, approximately a year ago, seeking a fresh start in a safe neighborhood.

The suspect, 34-year-old Shane James, was arrested on the evening of the attack and has since been charged with capital murder. The shooting spree began in Bexar County, near San Antonio, where the bodies of James’ parents, 56-year-old Shane James Sr. and 55-year-old Phyllis James, were discovered. Authorities believe the parents were killed sometime between December 4th at 10 p.m. and December 5th at 9 a.m. in the residence they shared with their son.

Following the murders in Bexar County, James drove approximately 80 miles to Austin, where he continued his rampage. One of his targets was a school resource officer near Northeast Early College High School, whom he shot in the leg. The Austin Police Department reported that James then proceeded to south Austin, where he killed Rahman and Ba. Hours later, James targeted a 39-year-old cyclist, inflicting a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

Later that evening, a homeowner in Austin contacted the police after witnessing a man breaking into his residence through a live feed from his home surveillance camera. The homeowner’s wife and special needs daughter were inside the house at the time. When an Austin police detective, who was working as a uniformed patrol officer due to a staffing shortage, arrived at the scene, he confronted James in the backyard. The suspect opened fire, striking the detective multiple times. James then fled the scene in a stolen vehicle, leading police on a high-speed chase before crashing into another car. Upon apprehending James, officers discovered a .45 caliber handgun in his waistband and two ammunition magazines in his pocket.

Further investigation revealed that James had broken into another home on Austral Loop in Austin. Inside, officers found 56-year-old Katherine Short and her 30-year-old daughter, Lauren Short, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Tragically, both women were pronounced dead at the scene.

A day after his arrest, James attempted to escape from the Travis County Jail, resulting in deputies using force to subdue him. Specific details regarding the attempted escape have not been disclosed.

Authorities have stated that all the incidents throughout the shooting spree are believed to be the work of a single suspect, Shane James. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar revealed that their department had previous encounters with James, including an arrest in January 2022 for three misdemeanor counts related to an assault on his parents and sibling. At the time, the James family claimed that James suffered from mental health issues and should not be incarcerated.

Following his release from jail in 2022, James was required to wear an ankle monitoring device. However, he cut off the device shortly after his release, prompting the issuance of misdemeanor warrants for his arrest. In August 2022, Bexar County deputies responded to a call from James’ father, who reported that his son was experiencing a mental health episode. Although deputies attempted to persuade James to come out of his room, they were unable to arrest him due to the limited authority granted by the misdemeanor warrants. Unfortunately, deputies never received a callback from the father, indicating that James had left his bedroom.

Shane James served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army from February 2013 to August 2015. Records indicate that he had no deployments during his military service and left the Army with the rank of first lieutenant.
