Accident – Death – Obituary News : Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) to Commence Redevelopment Work on Accident-Prone Areas

The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) has announced plans to undertake redevelopment work on some of the capital’s most accident-prone spots. The aim of this initiative is to prevent mishaps and reduce traffic congestion in these areas.

According to officials, the first phase of this project will focus on fixing several black spots that have been identified as high-risk locations. These include Mukarba Chowk, Madhuban Chowk, Bhalaswa Chowk, Mangolpuri Flyover, and Peeragarhi Chowk. The PWD will analyze these stretches to determine the reasons behind the accidents and implement measures to avoid them.

Earlier this year, The Indian Express conducted a series on the 10 most dangerous black spots in Delhi, shedding light on the urgent need for improvement in these areas. The PWD is now working in collaboration with the Transport department to plan and implement design changes that will enhance safety and reduce accidents.

At Madhuban Chowk, which witnessed 13 fatal crashes in 2020, the PWD plans to construct facilities for pedestrians, including safe footpaths, proper road signage, speed limits, and crossing facilities if necessary. This particular stretch has been identified as one of the most dangerous black spots in the city.

Work on Peeragarhi Chowk has already begun, with the PWD increasing the height of the central verge railing to discourage jaywalking. Additionally, the department will construct proper footpaths near the Rohtak Road lane and the intersection. Similar measures, such as repairing kerbstones, pavements, painting road markings, and installing heavy-duty flow studs, will also be undertaken at Bhalaswa Chowk and other identified spots.

Both Bhalswa Chowk and Mukarba Chowk have consistently maintained their presence on the “most dangerous” list for the past few years, highlighting the urgency of addressing safety concerns in these areas.

The Delhi Police designates black spots after more than three or ten fatal accidents occur within a 500-meter range, marking them as accident-prone zones. The top ten accident-prone zones, where the highest number of fatal accidents occur, are deemed “accident black spots.”

Earlier this year, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal reviewed road safety measures in the capital and discussed various policy interventions, including rectification of accident-prone zones through the District Road Safety Committee.

The PWD’s redevelopment work is expected to significantly improve safety conditions in these accident-prone areas and alleviate traffic congestion. By addressing the root causes of accidents and implementing necessary changes, the department aims to create a safer and smoother commuting experience for the residents of Delhi..
