Accident – death – Obituary News : CARLSBAD — A dramatic incident unfolded in Carlsbad back in October when a 25-year-old driver was arrested for allegedly firing at a police officer during a traffic stop. The shocking events were captured on video footage released by the authorities on Friday.

The incident occurred after Officer Vincent Abbate observed a driver in a white Ford van committing multiple traffic violations. Abbate promptly conducted a stop, leading to a series of events that would leave everyone on edge. The video footage shows the van running a red light and a stop sign before eventually pulling over near Madison Street and Oak Avenue.

As Abbate approached the vehicle, the driver, later identified as Patrick Doherty, unexpectedly pulled out a handgun and fired a single round at the officer. Miraculously, Abbate managed to seek cover and return fire with his service weapon. The dash camera footage reveals the officer’s rounds shattering the back windows of the van, highlighting the intensity of the situation.

Thankfully, no one sustained injuries during the exchange. At the time of the incident, Abbate had been with the Carlsbad Police Department for approximately 14 months, serving as a dedicated patrol officer.

Following the gunfire, Doherty drove a short distance south before eventually stopping. Abbate, realizing the gravity of the situation, promptly called for additional officers. The responding officers then ordered Doherty out of the vehicle, leading to a tense standoff. Body-worn camera footage captured Doherty stating, “It was just a scare tactic,” as he backed up toward the officers. He was subsequently arrested without any further incident.

Upon further investigation, authorities discovered a 9mm “ghost gun” on the driver’s side floorboard of the van. These untraceable firearms are assembled from parts, making them particularly concerning for law enforcement.

The next court hearing for Doherty is scheduled for December 13, where further details regarding the incident will likely be presented. The release of the video footage sheds light on the terrifying events that transpired during this traffic stop, emphasizing the dangers that law enforcement officers face daily in the line of duty..
