One female caller, clearly in distress, informed responders, “Someone’s shooting inside the office.” The sound of gunshots could be heard in the background as she desperately pleaded for immediate assistance, saying, “Please hurry.” When asked if anyone else was with her, she replied, “It’s just me… I’m alone.”

Another caller recounted the horrifying moment when they heard shots fired and screaming as they were getting off the elevator. They immediately fled the scene, witnessing numerous students running out of the building. “Two officers ran into the building, and I ran out of the building,” they explained.

In addition to students, terrified parents also reached out to 911, informing authorities that their children were hiding in classrooms. One mother shared that her daughter could hear the gunshots. As she was on the phone with 911, she received a text from her daughter stating, “Mom, I’m scared.” The operator advised the mother to instruct her daughter to stay calm and not open the door unless she heard the police yelling “Metro police,” ensuring her safety.

According to ABC news, the police stated that Polito had a list of specific individuals he intended to target. However, when he couldn’t locate them, he resorted to firing indiscriminately. A fourth victim was also shot but remained in stable condition as of Wednesday night.

The identities of the faculty members who tragically lost their lives were revealed as Patricia Navarro Velez, a 39-year-old accounting professor, Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang, an associate professor in the business school’s Management, Entrepreneurship & Technology department, and Naoko Takemaru, a 69-year-old associate professor of Japanese studies.

The officers involved in the shootout with Polito were identified as Detective Nathaniel Drum, who has been employed with the University Police Services since 2017, and Officer Damien Garcia, a member of the force since 2018. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, as per department policy. Adam Garcia, the police chief for the University Police Services Southern Command, praised their actions, calling them heroes for preventing further tragedy.

U.S. President Joe Biden expressed his sorrow over the shooting, emphasizing that such incidents should never be considered normal. He acknowledged that the University of Nevada had become the latest college campus to be terrorized by gun violence and urged Congress to take action against the epidemic. Biden cited the alarming statistics, stating that the nation had witnessed over 600 mass shootings and approximately 40,000 deaths due to gun violence this year alone. He called for bipartisan support to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, enact universal background checks, and implement other common-sense measures to curb gun violence.

The tragic events at Nevada University highlight the urgent need for stricter gun control measures and a concerted effort to address the rampant issue of gun violence in the United States. As the nation mourns the loss of innocent lives, the call for action grows increasingly louder..
