BLOOMINGTON, IN – In a shocking turn of events, a 42-year-old man has been apprehended and accused of murder in relation to the tragic death of an individual near a homeless encampment in a wooded area on the west side of Bloomington. The Bloomington Police Department (BPD) released a statement on Saturday morning (December 9, 2023), confirming the arrest of Craig A. Pearson after extensive interviews with witnesses.

Craig A. Pearson, described as a “transient” in the news release, was identified as a suspect following the questioning of several witnesses on both Thursday and Friday (December 7 and December 8). The BPD defines “transient” in their general police order on encampments as an individual who lacks stable housing or employment, residing in one location for brief periods of time. This is in contrast to the definition of a “person experiencing homelessness,” which refers to someone lacking a fixed, regular, or adequate nighttime residence.
According to the news release, officers initially responded to a distressing report at approximately 5:40 p.m. on December 7. The incident occurred in the wooded area near Wheeler Mission, situated in the 200 block of S Westplex Avenue. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered a lifeless body bearing multiple injuries consistent with being inflicted by a sharp object.
The Monroe County coroner’s office has yet to officially confirm the victim’s identity, as stated in the news release. The investigation remains ongoing, and the BPD urges anyone with relevant information regarding the murder to promptly contact Detective Josh Burnworth at (812) 339-4477.
