Accident – death – Obituary News : Two faculty members from the UNLV Lee Business School were among the three people killed in a shooting spree at the University of Las Vegas-Nevada on December 6. The gunman, Anthony Polito, had unsuccessfully sought to join the university’s business school faculty.
In a message posted on the school’s website, UNLV President Keith E. Whitfield identified the victims as Patricia Navarro-Velez, an assistant professor of accounting, and Cha-Jan “Jerry” Chang, a lecturer of management information systems. The identity of the third victim, also a faculty member, has not been released pending notification of next of kin. Another faculty member was injured in the shooting and remains hospitalized.
The shooting took place at Beam Hall, which houses UNLV’s Lee Business School. Polito was killed by law enforcement as he left the building. According to media reports, Polito had a list of targets at the school and was in possession of more than 150 rounds of ammunition.
Polito, a former long-time professor at East Carolina University, had been living in Henderson, Nevada. Authorities have not determined a motive for the shooting, but Polito had reportedly applied unsuccessfully to work at several colleges and universities in Nevada. Prior to the shooting, Polito had also mailed letters containing white powder to at least 22 academic institutions, though the substance has not been identified.
Polito had previously served as an adjunct faculty member at Roseman University of Health Sciences in Henderson, teaching two courses in the school’s MBA program from October 2018 to June 2022. He left when the program was discontinued. Polito held a bachelor’s degree in mathematics/statistics from Radford University, an MBA from Duke Fuqua School of Business, and a Ph.D. in operations management from the University of Georgia Terry College of Business.
The tragedy has deeply affected the UNLV community. In a message to the university, President Whitfield expressed his condolences and urged students and faculty to seek counseling services if needed. He also praised the response of emergency responders and expressed gratitude for their swift actions.
In the aftermath of the shooting, UNLV has decided to cancel in-person classes for the rest of the semester and has canceled final exams scheduled for the week of December 11. The university is working to determine the timing of the remainder of the academic calendar, including finals and commencement.
The shooting has left the UNLV community in shock and grief. President Whitfield acknowledged the pain and urged everyone to support one another during this difficult time. Counseling services are available to students and employees through various channels, including the Employee Assistance Program and the Vegas Strong Resiliency Center.
As the investigation continues, the UNLV community is coming together to mourn the loss of two beloved faculty members and support those affected by the tragedy..
