“Safdarjung Hospital suicide” : Medical Student Jay Dipesh Savla Found Hanging in Delhi, Suicide Note Recovered

Accident – Death – Obituary News : New Delhi, December 9: In a tragic incident, a 25-year-old postgraduate medicine student and resident doctor at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his rented accommodation in south Delhi. The police have stated that a suicide note was recovered from the spot, which revealed that the deceased had been suffering from depression for the past two years.

The deceased has been identified as Jay Dipesh Savla, hailing from Kandivali West in Mumbai. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), Chandan Chowdhary, informed that a PCR call was received at the Hauz Khas police station on Friday, reporting the discovery of a person hanging. The caller, Payal Saini, resides on the first floor of the house in Gautam Nagar, while Savla lived on the second floor. The landlady informed the police that Savla had committed suicide by hanging himself.

Upon investigation, it was found that Savla had used a bedsheet to hang himself from the ceiling fan. The police also discovered a suicide note in the room, in which the deceased had expressed his struggle with depression and mentioned being under medication. The statements of Savla’s father, Dipesh Ratilal Saval, and other relatives were recorded on Saturday, and they do not suspect any foul play. After conducting an autopsy at AIIMS, Savla’s body was handed over to his family members. The police have initiated an inquest proceeding in the matter.

The news of Savla’s tragic demise has sent shockwaves through the medical community. The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) mourned his loss and shared a video posted by Savla in December 2022. The video showcased Savla’s intricate and sorted thought process, highlighting his happiness with his course in Medicine and his aspirations for 2023. FORDA expressed their sadness at losing him to depression, emphasizing that it can affect even the strongest and most insightful individuals.

Dhruv Chauhan, a medical influencer and Assistant Medical Superintendent at a Delhi hospital, also expressed his shock and sadness over the incident. He highlighted that depression, especially among doctors, is not just an illness but has become a pandemic in the country. Chauhan urged the government and authorities to recognize this issue before more lives are lost. He pointed out that Savla was not an ordinary doctor, as he was a Black Belt in martial arts, an international-rated chess player, and actively involved in social issues.

This unfortunate incident has once again brought attention to the mental health challenges faced by medical professionals. Savla’s suicide is the fourth case within the past 1-2 weeks, raising concerns about the well-being and support available for doctors. The medical community, along with the government and authorities, must address these issues and provide the necessary resources and support to prevent further tragedies..
