(WIVB) — Authorities in Niagara Falls have announced that the data recorder, also known as a “black box,” from the vehicle involved in the tragic car accident at the Rainbow Bridge has been recovered. However, it seems that the device has suffered severe damage, posing challenges for retrieving the information it contains, according to the Niagara Falls police on Saturday.

The accident, which occurred on November 22, claimed the lives of Kurt and Monica Villani, a prominent couple from Grand Island. The couple was traveling in a 2022 Bentley Flying Spur that was reportedly speeding before it crashed near a Customs and Border Protection building. The vehicle went airborne before the collision, resulting in the closure of four U.S.-Canada border bridges for a period of time. Thankfully, the bridges have since reopened.

In their efforts to investigate the incident, the police have been in contact with Bentley Motors, the manufacturer of the vehicle involved. The company has provided them with documentation regarding prior recalls and general information about the data recorder. However, Bentley Motors has requested that subpoenas be obtained before releasing personal information, documentation, and records related to the specific vehicle in question. To fulfill this requirement, the Niagara County District Attorney’s office is collaborating with the police.

While the police await the release of the Medical Examiner’s report, the cause of the crash remains under investigation. The damaged data recorder presents a significant hurdle in uncovering crucial details that could shed light on the circumstances leading to the accident.
