According to the search warrant, Spokane police officers shot and killed Jones-Hilburg after they observed the “outline of a dark-colored firearm” on his shoulder holster. The officers initially approached Jones-Hilburg because they suspected him of shoplifting, as they reportedly witnessed him using a magnetic key to remove security devices from items and concealing those items on his person.

When the officers confronted Jones-Hilburg just before he exited the store, he immediately began to resist. Despite being tased by the officers, he managed to break free and continued to resist their attempts to detain him. The entire confrontation was captured on one of the officer’s body cameras.

The struggle between the officers and Jones-Hilburg ensued between the north and south doors of the Walmart. At one point, Jones-Hilburg was tased again, causing him to slow down and fall to the floor. It was during this time that one of the officers yelled, “He’s got a gun!” in reference to Jones-Hilburg. Jones-Hilburg responded by denying the claim and allegedly reached his left hand towards his chest. Officer Karl Richardson then fired a single shot, which proved fatal. The body camera footage reportedly shows Jones-Hilburg continuing to resist until he lost consciousness.

A detective who reviewed the body camera footage stated that he saw the outline of a dark-colored firearm, which appeared to be in a shoulder holster, as well as additional magazines. Investigators also obtained security footage from Walmart, which showed Jones-Hilburg on his cell phone while gathering items, leading them to believe that he may have been working with another individual.

Upon searching the area, police found a gun and ammunition near Jones-Hilburg’s body. Further investigation revealed that the gun had been reported stolen from Airway Heights earlier in 2021.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner identified Jones-Hilburg and conducted tests on a urine sample, which tested positive for amphetamines and methamphetamines.

In light of these developments, a GoFundMe page has been set up to assist Jones-Hilburg’s family with funeral expenses.

The Spokane Police Department continues to investigate the incident and is working to gather additional evidence. Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact the authorities.
