In a shocking incident that unfolded at a police station in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, a 55-year-old woman named Ishrat was accidentally shot and critically injured by a police officer. The incident, which was captured on video, occurred on December 8 at around 2:50 pm, as reported by NDTV.
According to witnesses, Ishrat had gone to the police station to inquire about her passport when the unfortunate incident took place. As she approached the officer in charge of her passport verification, an argument broke out between them over alleged demands for money. The situation escalated, leading to the officer discharging his firearm, with the bullet hitting Ishrat and causing her to collapse on the ground.
A relative of the injured woman, Jeeshan, revealed that Ishrat had been receiving calls demanding money prior to her visit to the police station. The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear. Jeeshan stated, “She had visited the police station for passport enquiry. She was getting calls for money. Don’t know who shot her. Don’t know about the money demanded. There was an argument between them,” as quoted by NDTV.
Ishrat was immediately rushed to the hospital, where she is currently in a critical condition. Meanwhile, the accused policeman, identified as Manoj Sharma, is still at large. It was revealed that Sharma accidentally pulled the trigger while cocking his gun just a few inches away from Ishrat. As a result of his negligence, Sharma has been suspended from duty and a criminal case has been registered against him.
Senior police officer Kalanidhi Naithani stated, “Inspector Manoj Sharma has been suspended with immediate effect due to his negligence, and a criminal case has been registered against him. The injured woman is being treated by the doctor’s team, and the footage of the incident is being investigated by the field unit,” as quoted in the NDTV report.
The shocking incident has raised concerns about the safety and accountability of police officers. Social media users expressed their outrage, with one individual highlighting the alleged attempt by the police to detain Ishrat’s son, who was present as an eyewitness during the incident. The family has accused the officer of demanding a bribe before the shooting took place, leading to suspicions that the police may be attempting to protect Sharma.
