Recently, law enforcement authorities released video footage of a non-injury police shootout that occurred during a routine traffic stop in a residential neighborhood near Carlsbad State Beach. The incident took place two months ago, but the video has just been made public. The video can be viewed by following this link: [insert link].

The events leading up to the exchange of gunfire began on the night of October 20. Officer Vincent Abbate of the Carlsbad Police Department pulled over a white Ford van at the intersection of Madison Street and Oak Avenue. The reason for the traffic stop was the driver’s violation of a red light and a stop sign. Little did Officer Abbate know that this routine traffic stop would soon escalate into a dangerous situation.

The encounter was captured by the dashcam in the patrol car as well as Officer Abbate’s body-worn camera. As Officer Abbate approached the vehicle, the driver, later identified as 25-year-old Patrick Harold Doherty of Oceanside, pulled out a pistol and fired a shot at the officer. Miraculously, the bullet narrowly missed Officer Abbate, exiting the vehicle through the rear side of the passenger door.

In response, Officer Abbate quickly retreated towards his cruiser, firing approximately 15 rounds at the back of the van and shattering its rear windows. Doherty attempted to escape but was forced to stop in a southbound traffic lane after a short distance.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, Officer Abbate called for backup officers. Doherty, following the officer’s commands, exited the van with his hands raised above his head. Officer Abbate then took him into custody. During the arrest, Doherty informed the officer that he had left an unserialized ghost gun on the driver’s-side floor of the van. Investigators later recovered the weapon at the mentioned location.

While escorting the suspect to his cruiser, Officer Abbate sought answers by asking Doherty what had led to the shocking exchange of gunfire. Doherty’s response was disconcerting.

“Scare tactic – that’s the only reason why I did anything,” Doherty admitted. He mentioned a recent DUI arrest as a possible reason for his actions, stating that he was merely scared.

Doherty now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, assault with a firearm, resisting arrest, illegally carrying a loaded gun in public, and driving while intoxicated. He remains in custody awaiting trial.

The release of this video footage serves as a reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face daily in the line of duty. It also highlights the importance of proper training and equipment to ensure officers’ safety and the safety of the communities they serve.
