Edward Poindexter, a former Black Panther leader who spent over 50 years in prison for a crime he consistently maintained he was innocent of, has passed away while still incarcerated. Poindexter’s death was announced on December 9, 2023, by Philip Lewis on Twitter, who revealed that Poindexter had been a target of the infamous FBI program COINTELPRO.

Edward Poindexter was born on August 1, 1944, in Omaha, Nebraska, and grew up in a racially segregated society. As a young man, he became involved in civil rights activism and eventually joined the Black Panther Party, a revolutionary socialist organization fighting against racial oppression and police brutality. Poindexter quickly rose through the ranks and became a prominent leader within the party.
In 1970, Poindexter and another Black Panther member, Mondo we Langa (formerly David Rice), were convicted of the murder of an Omaha police officer during a bombing incident. Both Poindexter and we Langa maintained their innocence throughout their trials and subsequent years in prison. Many activists and supporters believed they were unjustly targeted due to their involvement in the Black Panther Party and their efforts to combat systemic racism.
