HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFTS) – A 68-year-old bell ringer for the Salvation Army has come forward to share her terrifying encounter after being attacked in a bustling shopping plaza. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, but fortunately, two courageous individuals stepped in to assist.

The victim, identified as Billie Richert, recounted the harrowing experience. Richert had just finished ringing bells for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign at the Publix store on Boyette Road in Riverview.

As Richert made her way towards her car, an unknown man approached her, aggressively demanding her car keys. Shocked and caught off guard, she had little time to react.

Surveillance footage released by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office captured the suspect, later identified as Robert Moore, sitting on the curb. Richert unknowingly passed by him, only to be confronted moments later.

Refusing to comply with the assailant’s demands, Richert warned him that she possessed pepper spray. However, her defiance led to a violent escalation as Moore forcefully threw her to the ground.

In the midst of the crowded parking lot, startled customers heard Richert’s screams for help. Fearing for her safety, she realized the severity of the situation, stating, “I could have sustained serious injuries, broken bones, or even a cracked skull. He could have inflicted even more harm, possibly stabbing me. But then, out of nowhere, a stranger came to my rescue, detaining him. He was my guardian angel.”

The Good Samaritan who intervened had served in the U.S. Army for over a decade. Though he wished to remain anonymous, he expressed his satisfaction in being able to assist during the incident.

Another bystander also joined in restraining the suspect until law enforcement authorities arrived at the scene.

Expressing her gratitude towards the courageous individuals who came to her aid, Richert stated, “For someone to intervene in a situation they knew nothing about and help an elderly person, it was truly remarkable. I am immensely thankful.”

Following his apprehension, Robert Moore was taken into custody and charged with battery and robbery.

Despite the traumatic experience, Richert remains resilient, asserting, “I refuse to let him steal my joy.”
