A preliminary hearing for a Gillette man accused of drunkenly shooting arrows at his neighbor’s home has been postponed. William R. Wright, 37, is facing charges of aggravated assault and battery, as well as misdemeanor counts of destruction of property and interference with a peace officer. The hearing, originally scheduled for a previous date, has now been rescheduled for January 5.

Initially, Wright’s bond was set at $75,000 cash or surety. However, it was later reduced to $10,000 after Wright’s wife submitted a letter to the court detailing their family’s hardships and the need for Wright’s assistance in providing for their loved ones. This prompted the court to consider the financial situation and amend the bond amount accordingly.

The incident unfolded on November 6 when a Spanish-speaking woman, who had previous contact with a Gillette police officer, called the officer on his work phone. She reported that a man was outside her home, yelling and making offensive gestures towards her. As the officer instructed her to call 911, the woman interrupted to inform him that the man had just struck her house with an arrow. Looking out of her living room window, she identified the man as Wright, who allegedly pointed a bow at her and fired another arrow into the side of her home.

According to court documents, the woman witnessed Wright then retrieving the arrows from the side of her house. The police were promptly dispatched to the scene, where they initially observed Wright peering out of his residence before retreating inside. Eventually, he complied with the officers’ commands and emerged from the house, displaying signs of intoxication such as unsteady walking and dropping a lit cigarette from his mouth.

Upon questioning, Wright allegedly refused to cooperate and directed profanities towards one of the officers. It took the efforts of four officers to finally restrain and handcuff him. During the subsequent search of Wright’s residence, law enforcement discovered a bow and arrows in plain sight. Furthermore, they determined that the arrow holes on the woman’s house matched those found in Wright’s home.

While Wright admitted to being upset with his neighbor’s loud music, he denied stepping out of his house with a bow, causing any damage with arrows, or aiming a loaded bow at his neighbor. As part of the investigation, Wright underwent a breath test, which revealed his blood alcohol level to be 0.10%. Additionally, it was revealed that he was on probation with alcohol restrictions. A search warrant was obtained, and the police seized an archery bow and four arrows as evidence.

The continuation of the preliminary hearing will provide an opportunity for both the prosecution and defense to present their arguments and evidence. The court will weigh the testimony and facts to determine the appropriate charges and potential penalties for Wright. Until then, he remains under the custody of law enforcement..
