GRAVESEND, Brooklyn (WABC) — A 33-year-old for-hire driver has been arrested and charged with manslaughter and two counts of assault after a brutal attack on two cousins in Brooklyn, resulting in the death of one of them.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning around 4:30 a.m. on West 9th Street. According to the police, Sergio Zamora-Mendoza, the accused driver, picked up the two cousins and a dispute broke out over the fare when they admitted that they did not have enough money to pay.

Upon reaching their destination, a residential address in Brooklyn, the cousins exited the vehicle, only to be met with a violent assault. Witnesses reported that Zamora-Mendoza attacked the victims, causing severe facial injuries and trauma to the back of their heads.

Emergency services were called to the scene, and both men were rushed to Maimonides Hospital in critical condition. Sadly, a 66-year-old man, identified as Carlos Guaman, succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital just 45 minutes after arrival.

Authorities reviewed surveillance footage captured by a doorbell camera, which revealed the sequence of events. The video showed the victims exiting the vehicle, followed by the driver getting out and assaulting them repeatedly in the face. It remains unknown at this time whether a weapon was involved in the attack.

Sergio Zamora-Mendoza was subsequently apprehended and charged with manslaughter, along with two counts of assault in the second and third degree. The investigation into the motive behind the attack is ongoing.

As this tragic incident unfolds, the local community is left in shock and mourning the loss of Carlos Guaman. The police are urging anyone with information related to this case to come forward and assist in the investigation.
