LAS VEGAS — The Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner has released the name of the third victim killed by a gunman at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) on Wednesday. The victim has been identified as Naoko Takemaru, a 69-year-old Associate Professor of Japanese Studies at UNLV.

Dr. Naoko Takemaru was a highly respected educator who taught all levels of Japanese language, conversation, composition, grammar, culture, and Japanese-English translation at the university. Her dedication to teaching was recognized when she received the prestigious William Morris Award for Excellence in Teaching from the College of Liberal Arts at UNLV.
The shooting, which took place on December 6, 2023, also claimed the lives of two other professors: Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang, 64, and Patricia Navarro Velez, 39. The Clark County Coroner’s Office officially identified them as the other victims.
Cha Jan Chang was an associate professor in the business school’s Management, Entrepreneurship & Technology department. With degrees from Taiwan, Central Michigan University, Texas A&M University, and a Ph.D. in management information systems from the University of Pittsburgh, Chang had been teaching at UNLV since 2001. Patricia Navarro Velez, an accounting professor, held a Ph.D. in accounting and was actively involved in research on cybersecurity disclosures and data analytics. She joined UNLV nearly five years ago and focused on teaching accounting information systems. Her expertise and passion for her field made her a valuable asset to the university.

University President Keith E. Whitfield expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic event in a letter to students and staff, stating that it was the most difficult day in the history of the university.
