There were two fatal crashes in Middleton on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. One crash involved a group of teenagers, while the other claimed the life of an elderly man from Canterbury, New Hampshire.

The tragic news of a student’s death in a car crash was announced by school officials at Northeast Metro Tech on Wednesday night. The identity of the student, described as a senior from Malden, was not disclosed in the statement released by Superintendent David DiBarri. The district was informed of the incident early Thursday morning, leaving the community devastated. Superintendent DiBarri expressed deep sadness and assured that necessary resources would be made available to support the grieving community. He extended heartfelt condolences to the student’s family and friends, emphasizing the importance of utilizing available resources during such difficult times.

One of the fatal crashes involved a group of teenagers. At approximately 10 p.m., emergency responders received an automatic alert from a cellphone notifying them of the crash. They quickly arrived at an unpaved section of North Liberty Road to find a pickup truck overturned off the road. Inside the vehicle were four occupants, two males aged 18 and 17, and two females of the same ages. The 18-year-old male and 17-year-old male were still trapped inside the truck when the police arrived, while the two females were found standing outside the vehicle. Middleton Fire Department personnel successfully extricated the trapped individuals, and all four were provided with first aid before being transported to local hospitals. Tragically, the 18-year-old male was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other male remains hospitalized with serious injuries, while the two females have been treated and released. Northeast Metro Tech, a vocational high school in Wakefield, is offering grief assistance and counseling to those affected by the crash.

The second fatal crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Route 114 in the vicinity of Lookout Lane. A sedan was discovered on its side, and inside the vehicle was an 84-year-old man identified as Herbert E. Batchelder from Canterbury, New Hampshire. Emergency responders utilized the jaws of life to extricate Batchelder from the vehicle, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at Lawrence General Hospital.

These tragic incidents have left the Middleton community grieving and in shock.
