In a shocking series of events, a man suspected of going on a shooting rampage in two Texas cities has been arrested, only to attempt an escape from jail shortly afterward. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Shane James Jr., has been charged with capital murder in connection with the six deaths that occurred in Austin and San Antonio earlier this week.

According to Kristen Dark, a spokesperson for the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect managed to overpower a corrections officer and flee into a hallway after the officer opened a door to his housing unit at the Travis County Jail in Austin. However, he was quickly apprehended by corrections officers, who successfully restrained him. Dark emphasized that the jail is a secure facility, making it impossible for the suspect to escape the floor or the building.

The victims of this horrifying crime spree have been tentatively identified as Phyllis James, 55, and Shane James Sr., 56, who are believed to be the suspect’s parents, according to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar. Investigators discovered their bodies at their San Antonio home after the suspect was apprehended in Austin. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office was asked to check on the suspect’s residence by Austin police, who had arrested him earlier on Tuesday. Deputies found the two victims after noticing water leaking from under a door.

In Austin, the suspect is alleged to have killed four other individuals. Emmanuel Pop Ba, 32, and Sabrina Rahman, 24, were found shot in a neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon. Pop Ba died at the scene, while Rahman succumbed to her injuries at a hospital. Later that evening, officers responding to a burglary call engaged in a shootout with the suspect in a backyard, resulting in an officer being shot multiple times. Thankfully, the officer’s injuries were deemed non-life-threatening, and they are now in recovery. Two additional victims, Catherine Short, 56, and Lauren Short, 30, were found dead inside the residence where the shootout took place.

The suspect was apprehended after fleeing the scene and crashing during a police pursuit, as confirmed by Interim Police Chief Robin Henderson. The motive behind the crime spree remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
