A tragic incident unfolded yesterday afternoon at a busy intersection in St. Paul, Minnesota, as a man engaged in a shootout with a police officer. The man, identified as 24-year-old Brandon Daleshaun Keys from Maplewood, was shot by the officer and later succumbed to his injuries. The officer involved in the incident has been identified as Michael Tschida. Tschida, who sustained a leg wound during the altercation, received medical treatment at Regions Hospital and has since been released. He is currently on administrative leave as per standard procedure in cases involving the use of force by officers, pending investigation by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).

The BCA has provided preliminary details of the incident. It was reported that a woman contacted the police to report a violation of an order for protection. She stated that she was driving with another individual when Keys began ramming her vehicle from behind. Disturbingly, the woman claimed that Keys was armed with a gun. In a bid to escape the threatening situation, the woman stopped her car at the intersection of North Cretin and Marshall Avenues, near the University of St. Thomas. It was at this point that Keys exited his vehicle and approached the woman’s car. Officer Tschida arrived at the scene and instructed Keys to lie on the ground.

Tragically, a violent exchange of gunfire ensued between Keys and Tschida. Fortunately, no harm befell the woman and her passenger during the shootout. Investigators from the BCA, who are currently piecing together the events leading up to the incident, have discovered a handgun at the scene. Moreover, they are scouring the area for potential witnesses, surveillance footage, and any other evidence that could shed light on the incident. Additionally, Tschida’s body-worn camera captured the entire incident, although it remains uncertain whether and when the footage will be made public.

The severity of the situation prompted a swift response from the St. Paul Police Department, with numerous squad cars rushing to the scene. To ensure the preservation of evidence, blocks surrounding the crime scene were cordoned off.

Notably, this is not the first time Officer Tschida has been involved in a shooting incident. In May 2016, Tschida was one of four St. Paul police officers who fired their weapons during the fatal shooting of Jaffort Demont Smith. Smith, who had fired upon the officers and disregarded their orders to drop his weapon, was killed in the encounter. The incident took place in the 700 block of Buffalo Street. Smith had also injured a 49-year-old woman who was with him, causing her to lose her eye. Following the incident, a grand jury decided not to press charges against the officers involved. However, Smith’s family filed a civil rights lawsuit against the officers and the city of St. Paul, alleging a violation of Smith’s civil rights. The lawsuit is ongoing after a settlement was not reached during a recent conference on December 1.
