Accident – Death – Obituary News : Man Facing Additional Charges After Causing Fatal Crash on Florida’s Sunshine Skyway Bridge

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Leosvay Roman, a 22-year-old man accused of causing a deadly crash on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, is now facing additional charges, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, resulted in the death of a rideshare driver and one of his passengers.

Roman, a resident of Hialeah, Florida, was allegedly driving a stolen Ford Mustang when troopers were called to assist the sheriff’s office in apprehending him. The 22-year-old parked the stolen vehicle in front of a business on West Columbus Drive in Tampa, and as deputies approached him, he started the car and rammed into two sheriff’s office cars.

After this initial altercation, Roman fled the scene, driving southbound on I-275. An FHP trooper attempted to stop him when they reached the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, but Roman collided with the trooper’s car. Undeterred, he continued southbound to the top of the bridge before turning around and ramming the trooper’s car once again. He then sped the wrong way back down the southbound lanes.

Tragically, Roman’s reckless actions resulted in a head-on collision with a rideshare vehicle near the northern rest area of I-275. The collision claimed the lives of the 33-year-old rideshare driver from Bradenton and one of his passengers, a 52-year-old man. Two other passengers, a 51-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The list of charges against Roman continues to grow. In addition to the previous charges of felony murder, vehicular homicide, aggravated fleeing and eluding involving death, driving while license suspended involving death, and battery on a law enforcement officer, he now faces charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon, burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, resisting officer without violence, grand theft motor vehicle, reckless driving with property damage or personal injury, fleeing to elude high-speed, and driving with a canceled, suspended, or revoked license.

Authorities have also arrested Roman’s alleged accomplice, 30-year-old Mohammed Pujol. Pujol faces charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon and resisting officer without violence. He was reportedly parked in a sedan next to the stolen Mustang and attempted to drive towards a deputy, who narrowly avoided being hit.

The rideshare passengers involved in the crash were from Columbiana, Ohio, according to the FHP. Roman himself sustained serious injuries in the collision and was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. The trooper who was rammed by Roman’s vehicle suffered minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Uber, the rideshare platform that the driver was working with, has stated that the crash does not appear to be connected to their platform, as they have no records of trips matching the details of the incident.

As the investigation continues, Roman and Pujol will face the consequences of their alleged actions. The community mourns the loss of the lives taken in this tragic crash, and authorities are determined to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
