Accident – Death – Obituary News : Man Arrested for Firing AK-47-style Rifle in Northampton

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A Northampton man, identified as Joshua Martinelli, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly firing several rounds from an AK-47-style rifle. The incident took place at a two-family home on Wright Avenue.

According to a news release from the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, Martinelli fired the rounds into his adjoining neighbor’s residence. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but a bullet did pass through a pair of pants that a man was wearing in the adjoining residence. It was also reported that Martinelli’s dog was present during the shooting.

Martinelli appeared in Northampton District Court on Friday and is currently being held without bail. A dangerousness hearing has been scheduled for him. He is facing multiple charges, including assault to murder (4 counts), assault with a dangerous weapon (4 counts), animal cruelty, destruction of property, possession of an assault weapon, possession of a large capacity firearm, possession of a large capacity feeding device, improper storage of a large capacity firearm, possession of a firearm without an FID card, and possession of ammunition without an FID card.

The next hearing for Martinelli is set for December 14th in Northampton District Court. Northwestern Assistant District Attorney Andrew Covington commended the Northampton Police Department for their swift response to the incident, ensuring the safety of the public. He stated, “Fortunately, no one was killed or injured by the defendant’s dangerous conduct.”

In other local news, a Salmonella illness outbreak in Massachusetts linked to cantaloupes has been reported. Authorities are urging residents to be cautious. Additionally, the police are currently searching for a suspect who allegedly damaged a gas pump in Deerfield.
