Accident – death – Obituary News : Lahore, Pakistan – A tragic incident unfolded at a zoo in Bahawalpur, Punjab, as a man was mauled to death by tigers during a routine cleaning, leading to the immediate closure of the facility. On Wednesday morning, the lifeless body was discovered in Sherbagh Zoo after a staff member noticed one of the tigers playing with a shoe in its mouth.

Ali Usman Bukhari, a senior officer of the province’s wildlife department, expressed concern over the man’s unauthorized presence in the enclosure, stating, “The zoo is closed right now as we determine how the man got in.” The condition of the body indicated that the attack occurred late Tuesday night.

Although the autopsy report has not been released, evidence gathered from the enclosure suggests that the victim was alive when attacked by the tigers. Bukhari clarified, “The tigers did not go out of the den to attack the man; he jumped into their enclosure.” He assured that if any security lapses were identified, they would be promptly addressed, even considering the hiring of private security guards.

Following the discovery of the body, senior local government official Zaheer Anwar addressed the media outside the zoo, stating, “Our assessment so far is that this appears to be a lunatic, because a sensible person would not jump into the den.” He pointed out the secured nature of the den and speculated that the man may have jumped from the stairs behind it.

As the investigation progresses, the three tigers present during the incident have been restricted to a smaller space to facilitate evidence collection. The zoo, established in 1942 by the ruling royal family of Bahawalpur, charges adults Rs50 for entry.

New details have emerged regarding the victim’s identity. The deceased has been identified as Muhammad Bilawal Javed, a resident of Green Town. It has been revealed that Javed had a criminal record and had been involved in three cases. A service card belonging to Javed was found in his clothing, indicating his affiliation with the police department.

The circumstances surrounding Javed’s entry into the zoo remain a mystery. CCTV footage does not show his presence, and it is speculated that he may have entered by jumping over the wall. However, how he managed to access the tigers’ enclosure remains unknown.

To ensure a thorough investigation, the Commissioner of Bahawalpur has established a five-member fact-finding committee. This committee will examine the break-in, the victim’s motives, and any security flaws. They are expected to submit a preliminary report within 24 hours and a detailed report within seven days.

This tragic incident at the Bahawalpur Zoo has raised concerns about the need for enhanced security measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The local authorities are determined to address any lapses and ensure the safety of both visitors and animals within the zoo premises.
