According to police reports, the incident began when authorities attempted to pull over the motorcyclist, identified as 29-year-old Lewis McColley from Cedar Rapids, in the vicinity of 6th Street and 9th Avenue Southwest around 1:35 p.m. The reason for the attempted stop was the absence of a license plate on McColley’s motorcycle.

However, McColley chose not to comply with law enforcement’s request and instead tried to flee, initiating a high-speed chase. Ignoring traffic signals, McColley raced through a red light at 1st Ave SW and continued north on Ellis Blvd at excessive speeds.

Tragically, the pursuit ended in a devastating collision between McColley’s motorcycle and a bus near the intersection of Ellis Boulevard and O Avenue Northwest.

The absence of a helmet compounded the severity of McColley’s injuries, and he was swiftly transported to the hospital. Despite medical efforts, McColley succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
