Upon the discovery, the on-site medical staff and Emergency Medical Services were immediately alerted and attempted life-saving measures. Unfortunately, all efforts proved futile as Lewis was pronounced dead on the scene by medical personnel.

Lewis had been under the custody of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office since August 26, 2023, after being charged with capital murder in connection with the death of Zaiylah Bronson. The 19-year-old victim was a promising Wichita State University student, studying to become a math teacher. Tragically, she was approximately 16 weeks pregnant at the time of her untimely demise.

According to court records, Lewis had displayed disturbing online behavior prior to Bronson’s murder. Searches related to “snapping necks” and abortion were found on his cellphone web browsing history. Furthermore, he had also looked up information regarding stun guns, lethal weapons, and murder.

Lewis was detained on a $500,000 bond and faced charges of capital murder. The heinous crime took place at Bronson’s apartment near the WSU campus, as detailed in the affidavit. Surveillance cameras captured the last moments of Bronson’s life at 8:13 a.m. on August 26 when the couple took their dog out into the courtyard. Shortly after, Lewis searched for information on “snapping necks” before moving his car closer to Bronson’s door and retrieving a backpack containing disturbing items such as duct tape and towels.

Troubling searches for “weapons that can kill” were also found to have occurred the day before the murder. At 10:24 a.m., surveillance footage captured Lewis carrying Bronson’s lifeless body, wrapped in a blanket, out of the apartment. He then drove away, continuing to search online for information on murder before finally calling 911 approximately an hour later.

When officers arrived at Lewis’ apartment, he confessed that Bronson’s lifeless body was in the trunk of his car, stating, “I got scared,” according to the affidavit. Further investigation led to the discovery of an ax and shovel in the trunk as well.

During his interaction with the officers, Lewis revealed that Bronson had ended their relationship the day before the tragic incident, and they had engaged in arguments throughout the night. Eventually, in his own words, “he wanted her to stop talking, so he ‘grabbed her’” by the neck and applied pressure “until she stopped moving.”

This disturbing case has shocked the community and left many questioning the circumstances that led to such a tragic outcome. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as law enforcement authorities dig deeper into the case..
