According to reports, the police attempted to pull over the motorcyclist, identified as 29-year-old Lewis McColley from Cedar Rapids, in the vicinity of 6th Street and 9th Avenue Southwest around 1:35 p.m. The reason for the attempted stop was the absence of a license plate on McColley’s motorcycle. However, McColley refused to comply with the police’s signal and instead tried to evade them.

A high-speed chase ensued, with McColley disregarding a red light at 1st Ave SW and continuing to travel north on Ellis Blvd. Unfortunately, the pursuit ended in tragedy when the motorcycle collided with a bus near the intersection of Ellis Boulevard and O Avenue Northwest.

Regrettably, McColley was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, which likely contributed to the severity of his injuries. He was immediately transported to the hospital, where medical staff fought to save his life. However, despite their efforts, McColley succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Thankfully, the driver of the bus, who was the sole occupant, emerged from the collision unharmed. It was a fortunate outcome given the severity of the accident.
