Las Vegas, Nevada – The gunman responsible for the tragic shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) on Wednesday has been identified as 67-year-old Anthony Polito, a former college professor with a deep fascination for Las Vegas, puzzles, and conspiracy theories. The shooting left three people dead and one critically injured.

According to law enforcement sources, investigators are looking into the possibility that Polito may have been passed over for a job at UNLV, which could have been a motive for the attack. Polito’s online profile, including his now-removed LinkedIn page, revealed a man who had worked as a business professor at various schools in Georgia and North Carolina before his most recent employment at East Carolina University in Greenville until 2017.

Polito’s personal website, which featured syllabuses for his past courses, also contained a section dedicated to “Powerful Organizations Bent on Global Domination!” This section included links to conspiracy theory topics such as Freemasonry, the Trilateral Commission, and the Rothschild Family. Notably, George Soros, a common target for antisemitic conspiracy theories, was listed as one of the “Great Minds of the Twentieth Century.”

The weapon used in the shooting, a Taurus PT92 pistol, was legally purchased by Polito in Las Vegas approximately 18 months ago, according to a law enforcement source.

The shooting took place on the fourth floor of the university’s Beam Hall business school building, where students and professors were preparing for final exams. Outside, students were gathered for an event with games and food. The shooter moved through multiple floors before having an armed confrontation with law enforcement outside, where he was ultimately stopped. The manner of Polito’s death is still unclear.

In addition to the three victims killed by the gunman, one person was critically injured by gunfire, but their condition later stabilized at a hospital. Four others were taken to hospitals due to panic attacks.

The campus was placed under a shelter-in-place order during the incident, and students were evacuated by police. The shooting at UNLV brought back memories of the Route 91 Harvest music festival massacre that occurred just miles away in 2017.

Wednesday’s tragedy marks the 80th school shooting in the US this year and the 29th on a university or college campus, according to a CNN analysis.

Las Vegas Metro Sheriff Kevin McMahill praised the response of law enforcement personnel, crediting their training since the Route 91 shooting for their quick and effective actions.

Polito’s background as a professor was characterized by an unorthodox teaching style, often starting classes with personal anecdotes, particularly about Las Vegas. Former students described him as captivating and entertaining, but some felt that his teaching was too focused on personal stories, leading to minimal learning.

As the investigation into the shooting continues, authorities are working to identify the third victim and notify their next of kin. The UNLV community remains in shock and mourning as they grapple with the aftermath of this tragic event.
