CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — Jalen Jackson, the man accused of leading police officers on a high-speed chase across two cities before causing a fatal head-on collision, appeared in Cleveland Heights Municipal Court on Friday. The 23-year-old Jackson had his bond set at $1 million, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 13.

Jackson is facing several charges, including aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, tampering with evidence, discharging a firearm, weapons under disability, and a drug charge. Prosecutors revealed that prior to the incident on Wednesday, Jackson had multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest from Cleveland Municipal Court and Cuyahoga County.
The incident began when Jackson allegedly robbed an Amazon driver at gunpoint on Wednesday night and stole the driver’s van. The Amazon driver immediately reported the incident, leading to a police pursuit. Cleveland Heights Police Chief Chris Britton stated that one of his officers reported hearing two shots fired as they chased the white Enterprise van.
The pursuit escalated, with officers from the Cleveland Division of Police deploying a helicopter to assist. The chase eventually moved into Cleveland Heights, where the van turned into oncoming traffic on I-90 eastbound. The vehicle reached speeds of up to 100 mph before crashing head-on into another car, resulting in the death of the driver.
The victim has been identified as 70-year-old Dr. Curtis Birchall from Akron. Dr. Birchall was a respected figure in the community, running an anti-aging clinic in Rocky River. The tragic collision has left friends, family, and the local community devastated.
