The incident occurred on November 6, when the police received a 911 call about three suspects involved in an auto burglary at the intersection of Grayson and Seventh streets in West Berkeley. Upon arriving at the scene, an officer detained one suspect while another attempted to flee in a stolen SUV.

According to the BPD, “One of our officers followed the SUV and attempted an investigative stop, but the SUV continued to flee. The roadway was blocked by patrol vehicles; the SUV then reversed, ramming an officer’s patrol vehicle.” The driver of the SUV then drove onto the sidewalk, endangering the lives of two officers, the detained suspect, and an uninvolved pedestrian.

In response to the imminent threat, an officer on the sidewalk discharged his firearm, fatally striking the driver of the SUV. Despite immediate medical aid provided by the police, the driver, identified as 39-year-old David Bonino, did not survive and was pronounced dead at Highland Hospital.

The Berkeley Police Department Homicide Division and Internal Affairs Bureau are currently leading an ongoing investigation into the incident. Additionally, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office is conducting a concurrent investigation, in accordance with standard protocol. Once the DA’s investigation concludes, Berkeley’s Police Accountability Board will also conduct its own investigation.

In a recent development, the BPD has released edited body-camera footage of the incident. The department has warned that the video is disturbing and contains graphic material, advising viewer discretion. This release is part of the department’s commitment to transparency and providing the public with a comprehensive understanding of the events.

Samuel Becker, 37, of Novato, and Zoee Craven, 30, of Oakland, who were present with Bonino at the time of the incident, were subsequently arrested by the police. However, they have since been released from custody.

As the investigation continues, the BPD is expected to release raw body-camera footage from the incident. This additional footage will provide further clarity and insight into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.

In conclusion, the Berkeley Police Department is actively investigating the incident, with multiple agencies involved. The release of the video footage aims to promote transparency and ensure a thorough understanding of the events that led to the fatal shooting. The investigation will continue to uncover the details surrounding this tragic incident, providing answers to the community and ensuring accountability.

Update: Raw video footage from the incident can be downloaded from the Berkeley Police Department’s website until December 22. Please note that the content may be distressing and viewer discretion is advised.
