BERKELEY, Calif. – A newly released video footage shows the Berkeley police’s fatal shooting of an SUV driver who allegedly tried to evade arrest by ramming into officers. The incident took place in November, and the video provides crucial evidence of the events leading up to the shooting.
The body-worn camera footage captures the moment when an officer fired shots at David Bonino, a 39-year-old man who was driving a stolen Ford Expedition. Bonino was driving on the sidewalk towards the police and a man who was already in handcuffs at the time.

Before the shooting occurred, Bonino had reportedly crashed into a Berkeley patrol car on the street. The footage clearly shows the SUV reversing before abruptly swerving onto the sidewalk, endangering the lives of both the officers and the detained individual.
Both Bonino, who was a passenger in the stolen SUV, and the man in handcuffs were suspects in an earlier auto burglary incident that occurred on Grayson Street on the same night of November 6.
In light of the ongoing investigation, Jessica Perry, a spokesperson for the Berkeley Police Department, stated, “Given that this investigation is still ongoing, more facts may come to light regarding this incident. However, we feel it is important to provide you with the information we have now in the interest of transparency.”
Following the shooting, Bonino was rushed to Highland Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The two other individuals involved in the incident were arrested on suspicion of burglary, with one of them facing additional charges. The names of the suspects have not been disclosed by the police.
Additionally, the Berkeley Police Department released audio from a 911 call made by a witness who reported the alleged car break-in that ultimately led to the fatal shooting.
