Las Vegas, NV – The identity of the gunman responsible for the mass shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has been revealed as Anthony Polito, a 67-year-old career college professor. Polito had reportedly applied for a job at the university but was unsuccessful in his application. He previously worked as a professor at colleges in Georgia and North Carolina. Law enforcement sources have also revealed that Polito maintained a personal website where he claimed to have solved the Zodiac Killer case.

The shooting occurred on Wednesday morning at around 11:45am in Beam Hall, which houses UNLV’s Lee Business School. Police Chief Adam Garcia stated that the gunman initially opened fire on the fourth floor of the building before moving through several other floors. An “active shooter” alert was sent out, causing panic among students, staff, and faculty. On- and off-duty police officers quickly responded to the scene.

Two university police detectives encountered Polito outside of Beam Hall, armed with a handgun, and a shootout ensued. Polito was eventually shot dead. The active shooter alert was lifted approximately 40 minutes after the first reports of gunfire. Three victims were killed in the attack, while a fourth remains in critical but stable condition at a local hospital. The identities of the victims have not yet been released, but sources have indicated that they were faculty or staff members, not students.

The motive for the attack remains unknown, and police are examining Polito’s cellphone and professional papers for any possible clues. Las Vegas police also searched Polito’s apartment in Henderson, Nevada. On Polito’s LinkedIn page, which has since been changed to a “remembrance” page, he described himself as a semi-retired university professor living in Las Vegas. His personal website detailed his academic achievements and included sections on various theories and puzzles, including his claim to have solved the Zodiac Killer case.

The shooting at UNLV brought back memories of the 2017 Route 91 Harvest music festival massacre, which took place just a few miles from the college campus and remains the deadliest mass shooting in American history. However, Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated that law enforcement had learned from that tragedy and were able to respond swiftly and effectively in neutralizing the gunman in this latest incident.
