Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Waltham Police Officer and National Grid Worker

Details of the Incident

In a devastating incident on Wednesday evening, a Waltham police officer and a National Grid worker lost their lives while performing their duties at a construction detail. Two other utility workers also sustained injuries in the crash on Totten Pond Road. According to officials, the suspect responsible for the collision not only fled the scene but also stole a Waltham police cruiser before crashing it. The Massachusetts State Police, in a social media post at 6:40 p.m., informed that the suspect was eventually apprehended after a foot pursuit and is currently in custody.

Victims Identified

The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office identified the police officer killed as Paul Tracey, a 58-year-old with 28 years of experience in the Waltham police department. The utility worker, a 36-year-old man from Cambridge, has not been named pending family notification. The suspect, Peter Simon, a 54-year-old resident of Woodsville, N.H., is expected to be arraigned in Waltham District Court on Thursday morning, according to DA Marian Ryan.

Paul Tracey, the fallen police officer, had previously been recognized for his heroic actions in 2018. While off duty during a family vacation at Riviera Beach Resort in South Yarmouth, Tracey helped save the life of a woman who had overdosed on drugs. His compassionate nature and willingness to help others were praised by Police Chief Kevin O’Connell, who described Tracey as an amazing husband, loving father, and friend to all.

The utility workers injured in the crash were immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. National Grid expressed their concern and support, stating, “Our thoughts are with the crew members, their families, and loved ones.” Police departments from across Massachusetts have also offered their condolences to the Waltham Police Department and the loved ones of the fallen officer through social media platforms.
