University of Nevada, Las Vegas Shooting: Gunman Identified as Anthony Polito, Victim Identities Remain Unknown

Accident – death – Obituary News : The deceased suspect in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas shooting has been identified as Anthony Polito, a 67-year-old man. Polito opened fire on the UNLV campus just before 12 pm on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of three people. Reports indicate that Polito had applied for a professorship at the college but was rejected.

Polito was armed with a handgun during the shooting and was eventually shot dead by police in a shootout. Detectives are currently conducting a search of his home as part of their ongoing investigation.

Polito had an extensive background in academia, having worked as an associate professor at East Carolina University for over 15 years. He held a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business, a Master of Business Administration from The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Statistics as a double major from Radford University.

According to sources, Polito may have had connections to someone who works on the UNLV campus. On his LinkedIn page, he expressed enjoyment in receiving positive feedback from his students. One student praised him as one of the best teachers they’ve had, highlighting his expertise in teaching real-world applications.

The three individuals who tragically lost their lives in the shooting have not yet been named. Another victim was shot but is in stable condition, while four additional people were hospitalized due to panic attacks. Two officers also received minor injuries during the incident.

During a press conference, Sheriff Kevin McMahill commended the heroic actions of the officer who stopped Polito but did not provide specific details about the weapon used. President Joe Biden expressed his sadness over yet another act of gun violence, emphasizing the need for stricter gun control measures.

The entire Nevada system of higher education and campuses were closed as a precautionary measure, though there was no immediate threat to other campuses. The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop for Harry Reid International Airport in response to the shooting.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus is located near the Las Vegas strip and only a few miles away from the site of the 2017 Route 91 Music Festival shooting, the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Students and witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots and receiving emergency text alerts from the university. The campus was placed on lockdown, and tactical teams were seen moving through the area.
