A taxi driver in Tokyo has been taken into custody after being accused of intentionally causing the death of a pigeon with his car. The suspect, identified as 50-year-old Atsushi Ozawa, allegedly drove his vehicle into a flock of pigeons in Shinjuku City, Tokyo, resulting in the immediate death of one of the birds.

The incident, which occurred last month, has stirred controversy on social media platforms in Japan. While some people expressed their shock and disapproval, others questioned the severity of the situation. However, the authorities are treating the alleged abuse of wildlife protection laws seriously. Vets were called in to perform an autopsy on the pigeon’s body to gather evidence.

The autopsy report concluded that the pigeon died as a result of “traumatic shock.” Tokyo police have stated that Mr. Ozawa intentionally drove his car into the flock because he was angered by their presence on the road.

According to the police, the incident took place on 13 November. Mr. Ozawa purposely targeted a common pigeon, which is not considered a game animal. Consequently, he was arrested on Sunday.

In Japan, there are legal provisions for hunting a limited number of game pigeons. However, killing feral pigeons in urban areas is only permitted if they pose a nuisance by causing harm to crops and livestock. In such cases, prior approval from local authorities is required.

Fuji TV, a Japanese television network, reported that the local police described Mr. Ozawa’s behavior as “highly malicious” for a professional driver. After his arrest, Mr. Ozawa allegedly told investigators that “roads belong to humans, so the pigeons should have gotten out of the way.”

The incident was reported to the police by a passerby who was alarmed by the sound of the speeding car. Mr. Ozawa reportedly drove at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour directly into the flock of pigeons.

The news of the driver’s arrest sparked a range of reactions on social media. Some users expressed their support for the arrest, while others made jokes or criticized the police’s handling of the situation. However, many were deeply affected by the pigeon’s death and condemned Mr. Ozawa’s actions.
