The incident took place at approximately 11:45 a.m. when an unidentified gunman opened fire on the fourth floor of the Lee Business School building on the UNLV campus. The assailant then proceeded to several other floors before engaging in a shootout with two university police detectives outside the building, ultimately leading to his death, according to UNLV Police Chief Adam Garcia.

Tragically, three people lost their lives in the attack, while a fourth individual was rushed to the hospital in critical but stable condition, as confirmed by the authorities.

This harrowing shooting incident marks the deadliest in Las Vegas since October 2017, when a gunman unleashed terror on the world-famous Las Vegas Strip from a room at the Mandalay Bay casino, claiming the lives of 60 people and leaving over 400 injured. Curiously, the UNLV campus lies just a few miles away from the Mandalay Bay casino.

Although the identity of the gunman has not been officially released, law enforcement sources have informed The Associated Press that he was a former professor who had unsuccessfully applied for a position at UNLV. ABC News has identified the shooter as 67-year-old Anthony Polito, previously employed at East Carolina University in North Carolina.

According to ABC News, detectives are currently searching an apartment in Henderson, Nevada, where Polito is believed to have resided. Authorities have also reportedly retrieved his phone and are in the process of examining its contents, hoping to shed light on the events leading up to this tragic act of violence.

As of now, investigators have refrained from disclosing the identities of the victims or the type of weapon used in the shooting. However, witnesses have reported hearing as many as 20 shots fired during the attack.

The exact number of students present on the UNLV campus at the time of the incident remains unclear. However, Sheriff Kevin McMahill revealed that students had been congregating outside the building, engaging in activities such as eating and playing games. Sheriff McMahill emphasized that if the police had not neutralized the attacker, the number of casualties could have been significantly higher.

In the aftermath of this devastating event, Sheriff McMahill expressed his condolences, stating, “No student should have to fear pursuing their dreams on a college campus.”

The investigation into this tragic shooting is ongoing, and any individuals with information are urged to come forward. The Associated Press has played a significant role in contributing to this report.
