The suspect, 34-year-old Shane James, has been arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of four people in Austin. James is also accused of killing his parents, Phyllis James, 55, and Shane Matthew James Sr, 56, at their home in San Antonio.

The investigation began on Tuesday morning and continued throughout the day, with a series of violent incidents tied to the suspect. The police did not specify the cause of death for the four victims in Austin, but three others were injured in shootings.

Shane James has a history of mental health issues, according to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar. He was arrested in January 2022 and charged with three misdemeanors for family assault after allegedly attacking a sibling and both his parents. The family reportedly told authorities that James did not belong in jail because of his severe mental health issues.

In August, deputies responded to a mental health call at the James’ home. James barricaded himself in his upstairs bedroom and used racial slurs as he confronted the deputies. Despite his three outstanding misdemeanors, the deputies were not allowed to force entry into his room and left after James Sr promised to call them once his son left the room. However, the father never made the call.

The suspect was taken into custody after crashing his car while fleeing from police following a shootout with an officer who suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The interim Austin Police Chief, Robin Henderson, stated that James is believed to be responsible for all the incidents and that the police did not determine the connection until the last incident occurred on Tuesday night.

In the eight-hour attack on Tuesday, two police officers and a bicyclist were injured but are expected to recover. Texas Governor Abbot expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and praised the law enforcement officers for apprehending the suspect.

President Joe Biden also issued a statement offering condolences to the families affected by the shootings and expressing the need for stronger gun control measures. He urged Congress to take action and ban assault weapons, pass a national red flag law, and enact universal background checks.
