Taxi Driver Arrested for Allegedly Deliberately Killing Pigeon in Tokyo

A taxi driver in Tokyo has been arrested after allegedly intentionally killing a pigeon with his car. The suspect, identified as 50-year-old Atsushi Ozawa, is accused of driving his vehicle into a flock of pigeons in Shinjuku City last month, resulting in the death of one bird.

The incident has sparked a significant response on social media in Japan, prompting authorities to take the alleged abuse of wildlife protection laws seriously. In response, veterinarians were called in to perform an autopsy on the deceased pigeon to determine the cause of death.

The autopsy report revealed that the pigeon died as a result of “traumatic shock.”

Deliberate Act of Animal Cruelty

According to the Tokyo police, Mr. Ozawa deliberately drove his car into the flock of pigeons out of frustration with the birds occupying the road. The incident occurred on November 13th, where he used his car to kill a common pigeon, which is not considered a game animal.

The police have arrested Mr. Ozawa for his actions, emphasizing that while hunting a limited number of game pigeons is allowed in Japan, killing feral pigeons in urban areas is only permitted if they cause nuisances like damaging crops and livestock, with prior approval from local authorities.

Reactions and Commentary

Japanese media outlet Fuji TV reported that local police described Mr. Ozawa’s behavior as “highly malicious,” especially given his profession as a taxi driver.

During the investigation, Mr. Ozawa reportedly justified his actions by stating that “roads belong to humans, so the pigeons should have gotten out of the way.”

The passerby who witnessed the incident alerted the police, disturbed by the sound of the accelerating car. Mr. Ozawa was said to have driven his car at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour directly into the flock of pigeons.

Upon news of the driver’s arrest, the public response was mixed, with some offering support, making jokes, and criticizing the police. One commentator on social media wrote, “Japan is a sophisticated nation,” while another questioned whether the news was satirical.

Many expressed sadness over the pigeon’s death, stating that Mr. Ozawa could have simply honked his car horn to disperse the birds rather than intentionally causing harm.
