Las Vegas, NV – A tragic shooting incident unfolded on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) on Wednesday, December 6, leaving three people dead and one critically injured. The gunman, a 67-year-old career college professor, was subsequently shot and killed by responding officers.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, officers and UNLV police received reports of an active shooter near Beam Hall, the home of the university’s Lee Business School, at approximately 11:45 am. UNLV initially tweeted about the situation, informing the public that police were responding to reports of shots fired on campus near Beam Hall. Shortly after, the university announced that authorities were also investigating reports of gunfire at the Student Union building.

Adam Garcia, Director of University Police Services Southern Command, revealed that two UNLV campus detectives encountered the suspect outside Beam Hall and engaged in a shoot-out, resulting in the suspect’s death.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department stated that three people were killed and one was critically injured when the gunman opened fire. Additionally, four individuals were taken to local hospitals for panic attacks. Two officers sustained minor injuries while searching for victims. The identities of the victims have not been released, and the suspect’s name is being withheld until his next of kin is notified.

The source also mentioned that the suspect had a connection to someone who worked at the campus.

During a press conference, Sheriff McMahill commended the swift response of the officers, acknowledging their efforts in preventing further bloodshed by promptly arriving at the campus and neutralizing the suspect. He stated, “What happened today was a heinous, unforgivable crime. It’s a crime that we train for each and every day.”

Governor Lombardo echoed the sheriff’s statement and commended the officers for their quick response, potentially saving the lives of several students and faculty members. He expressed confidence in the response, stating, “I had no doubt that the response would be appropriate, it would be swift, it would be quick. Today, LVMPD did a fantastic job along with the University PD.”

In the wake of this tragedy, the UNLV campus will reportedly be closed on Thursday and Friday to allow for necessary investigations and to provide support to the affected community.
