Initial Accident and Stolen Vehicle

The first collision took place at approximately 5 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-129. The mishap involved a 2008 Toyota Camry, which had been reported stolen from South Sioux City, Nebraska. Sadly, the Camry collided with the center median barricade, leading to the subsequent chain of events.

Good Samaritans and Tragic Outcome

In a display of compassion and kindness, two good Samaritans immediately stopped to assist the driver of the stolen Camry. However, tragedy struck as a second vehicle, traveling eastbound, crashed into both the already damaged Camry and the two well-intentioned individuals. The second vehicle then proceeded to collide with a third car, which was parked on the shoulder of the interstate.

Regrettably, one of the heroic good Samaritans, a 66-year-old resident of South Sioux City, lost their life as a result of the devastating impact. The other Samaritan sustained injuries during the incident. Both the surviving Samaritan and the driver of the second vehicle were rushed to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Search for the Driver and Additional Collision

Shockingly, the driver of the stolen Camry fled the scene, leaving authorities in pursuit. At present, law enforcement is actively searching for the individual responsible for this tragic chain of events. Although a physical description of the driver was not provided, the sheriff’s office confirmed that the suspect is male.

Temporary Closures and Appeal for Information

Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-129, situated between the Dakota Avenue exit and the Missouri River, had to be temporarily closed due to these distressing incidents. The closures were necessary to facilitate the investigation process and ensure the safety of all involved.

The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office is appealing to the public for any information regarding the whereabouts of the driver of the stolen vehicle. If you have any relevant details, kindly contact the authorities immediately.
