Anthony Polito has been identified as the perpetrator in the tragic shooting incident that unfolded at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), resulting in the loss of three lives, according to sources cited by ABC. The suspect, Anthony Polito, aged 67, was shot and killed by law enforcement officers at the scene. Polito was believed to be a professor who had previously held positions at colleges in North Carolina and Georgia. It has been reported that Polito had applied for a position at UNLV, but his application was unsuccessful.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning when Polito, armed with a handgun, opened fire on the UNLV campus. The shooting claimed the lives of three individuals and left one person injured. Law enforcement engaged in a firefight with the suspect, ultimately neutralizing him. In their ongoing investigation, authorities are currently searching Polito’s residence in Henderson, Nevada, and examining his phone for any potential evidence that may shed light on the motive behind the shooting.

The identities of the victims have not been released at this time.

In response to this tragic event, Keith E. Whitfield, the president of UNLV, expressed his deep sorrow and described it as a “devastating day for UNLV.”

“With great sadness and grief, I am reaching out to inform you about a shooting incident that occurred on our campus—our home. We are still in disbelief as we attempt to comprehend this unimaginable event,” Whitfield stated.

He further added, “We will forever remember and honor those we have lost and those who suffered injuries. I mourn for the victims of this senseless shooting, and my heart goes out to the numerous students, faculty, staff, parents, loved ones, and members of the community who endured hours of excruciating uncertainty while law enforcement officers worked to secure the safety of our campus.”

As a precautionary measure, UNLV has made the decision to temporarily close its campus until Friday.
