67-Year-Old Career College Professor Anthony Polito Identified as Gunman in UNLV Shooting, Killing Three

Accident – Death – Obituary News : 67-year-old career college professor Anthony Polito has been identified as the gunman responsible for the shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) campus on December 6. Polito opened fire near Beam Hall, killing three faculty and staff members and critically injuring one student before being fatally shot by responding officers.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and UNLV campus police received reports of an active shooter around 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday. Detectives encountered Polito outside Beam Hall and engaged in a shootout, resulting in his death. Initially, police did not release the suspect’s identity, but sources close to the investigation later confirmed that he was Anthony Polito.

Although the identities of the victims have not been disclosed, it has been confirmed that they were not students. The injured student is reported to be in stable condition.

Polito, who described himself as a semi-retired university professor on his LinkedIn profile, had previously worked as an associate professor at East Carolina University from 2001 to 2017. He held a Bachelor of Science degree from Radford University, an MBA from Duke University, and a PhD from the University of Georgia.

On his LinkedIn profile, Polito also shared a link to a website where students reviewed his class and praised him as an exceptional educator. One student wrote, “Dr. Polito is a great teacher and gives our class real-life examples that are great to relate to the class work. He also understands how to keep the class intrigued. He is not some boring teacher that just reads every PowerPoint slide, and all we do is take notes. He keeps the classroom interested while also teaching the material. Probably one of the best professors I have had.”

Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for Polito’s actions, and the UNLV shooting has left the Las Vegas community shaken, especially in the wake of the 2017 mass shooting that claimed 60 lives.
